Vachellia seyal

Vachellia seyal, commonly called the Whistling thorn, is a small to medium-sized tree noted for its slender trunk, yellowish bark, and large, paired thorns—often housing ants that create the characteristic “whistling” sound. It thrives in dry savannahs and semi-arid regions of Africa and the Middle East, often forming part of acacia-dominated woodlands. The tree’s hardy nature and distinctive appearance make it easily recognizable. Traditionally, its gum and bark have been valued for soothing coughs, easing joint discomfort, and helping minor wounds. Its bioactive compounds provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, supporting overall health in communities where the tree grows.
